The first Saturday in August, my car was loaded up for a full day of wedding photography. I ran back into the house to say bye to my husband, Kevin, and my kids and I asked Kevin if he knew where Bonds Chapel was. Of course he knew where Bonds Chapel was! He told me it was home of the chain ghost and that he used to take girls there to scare them when he was in high school.

After nine years of photographing weddings in southern Indiana, I thought there were very few places I haven’t photographed at. In fact, three out of four of the weddings that I helped with this year were at places I had never photographed, Bonds Chapel in West Baden, Matilda’s Event Barn in Evanston and OFS Cool Springs in Velpen.

As you can imagine, all of the weddings I was scheduled to help with in the spring were canceled and by the time fall rolled around, I was super excited to spend a full day making pictures. My favorite photos capture the emotions and unexpected moments of the day.

There were two other events I had the opportunity to document in 2020. The first was the preschool graduation at Kid City USA Jasper. Taking candid photos of children is by far my favorite thing to photograph. Children are curious and hilarious and not afraid to be themselves in front of a camera. You never know what they’re going to do. It was a bonus that the graduation was held outside (beautiful natural light!) due to COVID!

The second was the deacon ordination of my friend and student photographer, Corey Bruns. This was actually my first time photographing an event in a mask and being around so many masked people since the pandemic began. It was odd and definitely presented the challenge of capturing emotion without facial expressions. It was an honor to photograph such an important event for Corey and I’m looking forward to documenting his priesthood ordination in May!

A special thanks to Kalli June Photography, Brescher Photography and Studio Expressions by Jessica for giving me a creative outlet in 2020. It was a difficult year and the joy and love in these photos fills my heart.
