Year in Pictures 2017: Saint Meinrad

How do you sum up a year in pictures alone? This is a challenge I take on every year, and it is never easy.

I take a look at all three areas of my life that I photograph, my work at Saint Meinrad Archabbey, freelancing as a second photographer at weddings and my personal life.

I’m starting off my annual Year in Pictures blog posts with Saint Meinrad because it was the easiest…I had help from the Communications team here at Saint Meinrad…and it’s ready to go. Stay tuned for the other two (or more) posts.

I create a year in pictures blog post, slideshow and gallery for Saint Meinrad every year. This includes pictures taken by a lot of talented people and the goal is to tell the story of the year at Saint Meinrad in photos alone.

This year, my initial edit came out to be over 150 pictures! Little by little, I tried to remove myself from each moment captured. I tried to determine which photos had the best light, the best composition, and the most emotion. And which photos told the story.

With the help of the Communications team, we narrowed the year down to 81 pictures. They show milestones in formation (such as the deacon ordination and graduation), monastic funerals, the energy of the summer youth conferences, the beauty of the Saint Meinrad grounds and the moments of everyday life. You can view all 81 pictures here. They were taken by monks, students and co-workers of Saint Meinrad.

This post here are the pictures I took that are my favorite.

Fr. Rupert Ostdick’s burial in the Archabbey Cemetery. There’s nothing like hearing the thud of dirt on the coffin.

Students visited with monks in the monastery infirmary during January Interterm classes.

The moon set behind the Archabbey Church while the sun rose.

William Burmester…now Father William…is congratulated by Fr. Denis Robinson after graduation in May.

Br. John Mark teaches a class on chant during the “One Bread, One Cup” Liturgical Youth Conference.

Youth react to winning and losing a rock, paper, scissors ice-breaking activity during the “One Bread, One Cup” youth conference. I look forward to photographing the youth conference every year. The next two photos are also from OBOC.

Amir Sehic with Conrad Schmitt Studios restores the artwork on the ceiling above the sanctuary at Monte Cassino Shrine.

Fr. Lambert Reilly greets Saint Meinrad alumni outside St. Bede Hall before he gives the Day of Recollection during the Alumni Reunion.

Deacon Nate Brunn blesses a new seminarian’s room during move-in day at the end of August.

A child keeps busy by playing with rosaries during the Monte Cassino Shrine blessing. I love this picture because it is my reality with two little kids.

Graduate Theology student Kristina Seipel ties a shoe for one of her students in a kindergarten religious education class. I love this picture because taking care of children is a special kind of service.

Deacon Gil Pierre gives advice to Fr. Peter Marshall during a practice confession in reconciliation class.

Deacon David Farrell carries a tree through the Memorial Lobby to decorate for the St. Nicholas Banquet.
